Homemade mounds bars 3 ingredients represent the simplest path to creating restaurant-quality coconut candy at home. These no-bake treats combine shredded coconut, sweetened condensed milk, and dark chocolate into an irresistible confection that rivals the store-bought version.

  • Total Time: 35 minutes
  • Yield: 12 bars 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups unsweetened shredded coconut
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk, 14 oz
  • 8 oz dark chocolate, 55% to 70% cocoa

Instructions

  1. Combine unsweetened shredded coconut with sweetened condensed milk in a large mixing bowl.
  2. Stir thoroughly using a wooden spoon until the condensed milk distributes evenly throughout the coconut.
  3. Continue mixing for about 2 minutes until a thick, paste-like consistency develops.
  4. Press the mixture firmly with the spoon to ensure complete incorporation and uniform texture.
  5. Line a 9×9 inch baking pan with parchment paper, allowing edges to extend beyond the pan sides.
  6. Transfer the coconut mixture to the prepared pan and press it evenly into a uniform layer.
  7. Use the back of a measuring cup or your hands to compress the filling until it reaches about 1/4 inch thickness.
  8. Place the pan in the refrigerator for 20 minutes until the filling becomes firm and dense.
  9. Remove from the refrigerator and use a sharp knife to cut the filling into 12 rectangular bars.
  10. Chop the dark chocolate into small pieces or measure out chocolate chips for melting.
  11. Create a double boiler by placing chocolate in a heatproof bowl over a pot of simmering water.
  12. Stir the chocolate constantly using a rubber spatula until completely melted and smooth.
  13. Remove from heat and allow the chocolate to cool for 2 minutes before dipping.
  14. Using a fork or chocolate dipper, submerge each coconut bar into the melted chocolate.
  15. Gently tap the fork against the bowl’s rim to remove excess chocolate.
  16. Place the coated bars on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  17. Allow the bars to set at room temperature for 15 minutes or refrigerate for 5 minutes until the chocolate hardens completely.

Notes

Use unsweetened shredded coconut for the best balance because sweetened coconut makes the filling too sweet. Chill the coconut layer fully before cutting so the bars hold their shape during chocolate dipping.
